Those who follow Mathematics will be aware that we've had a whole Chicago - Liverpool connection going on recently with John Heckle being one of the label's best rising stars. After causing much excitement with his first EP we get a full length album here. Disc one rocks a hard, electronic Chicago vibe with Mathematics patented tape saturation throughout and what must be an all-analogue production aesthetic. Climaxing in the side's most anthemic point, "The Voyager (Voyeur)" which features classic "French Kiss" style speed up / slow down sequencer abuse and an Italo-inspired arpeggio line to get all the hi-NRG freaks shaking their spandex like, well, Ste Spandex perhaps. Disc two goes darker and more acidic, trashy and in similiar in vein to some of Hieroglyphic Being's electronic-jazz workouts. "Red Defender" and "The Second Son" are both big hitters, a double strike to finish on with flanging percussion meeting crashing cymbols and Detroitian synthetic strings, clanging acid and saturated kick drums. Love live tape saturation, and viva Mathematics
