The sun is shining because it always does round here. In your mind, you are roller-skating down Venice Beach, the breeze gently kissing your blonde hair, bottom perfectly toned thanks to the attentions of Jane Fondas workouts. You live in an apartment up in Laurel Canyon, because all of your friends do, too. Theres a beautiful acoustic guitar hanging on the wall in the entrance to the lobby. Ned Doheny once came round and played a few tunes on it. That day was amazing. Life was never better.Ok, so it might be a fantasy, and you may actually live in a caravan in Morecambe Bay or a log cabin somewhere outside Tampere in Finland. But place this disc in its tray, hit play and suddenly the sun is out once more and life somehow feels so much better.Music For Pleasure has gathered together some of the finest soulful pop music of the 1970s; the sort that in our household gets called Yacht Rock. In doing so, theyve gathered together the scions of Laurel Canyon and the ghosts of Topanga for one last rallying cry.Of course, not all of these are actually from California, since weve got some Scots, a Yorkshireman, some Brummies, while Michael McDonald is from St Louis and Todd Rundgren is a Philly boy. No matter, as Maxwell Scott says in the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend. This legend has been compiled with some love, care and attention by Tom Findlay from Groove Armada. Heard of him? As part of Groove Armada, hes had Grammy- nominated singles (Superstylin), eight albums (count em), started the Lovebox festival in London and produced a series of hits and brilliant tunes from At The River to Song 4 Mutya. And, away from partner Andy Cato, hes also one half of Sugardaddy alongside Tim Hutton. The very same pair is responsible for the rather tasty cover of Aces How Long on this compilation. Also present and correct are Steve Miller Band with their much-covered Fly Like An Eagle, Work To Do by Average White Band, the venerable Michael McDonald weighs in with I Keep Forgettin, while theres room for Totos finest hour (Georgy Porgy), a super Balearic edit of 10ccs Im Not In Love, as well as a few curveballs (Ambrosia, Ned Doheny, Player), all blended together like a Strawberry Daiquiri on the terrace at the Chateau Marmont.Yeah, so the summers coming and Music For Pleasure has merely accelerated its arrival. You betcha by golly, it has. Let your hair down. Slip on your blue jeans and cowboy shirt (leave the top two buttons undone). Make yourself at home by the pool. Shake up a cocktail (mines a Mojito) and stick this on the sound system. Lay back and think of Laurel Canyon.Bill Brewster
