Recognizing early on that most life experiences could be expressed in musical terms, he was enthralled with the rhythms and sounds of nature and the imagery of the changing seasons. The Grateful Dead became a strong influence. However, he wasn't able to create the sound he envisioned in a traditional band. A sojourn in the American desert opened him to the idea of merging natural music with the technology-an idea that initially felt like cheating. Yet the combination of time, talented teachers and bandmates finally enabled him to produce the rich sounds he'd always heard.
